Who We Are

We are Scouts Canada. Our mission is to develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world. This particular group is called a Beaver Colony and it is for children ages 5 to 7 years (SK to grade 2). Our meetings most often take place in the Calvary United Church on Ridout St. South near Emery St. East. Usually these meetings are 1 hour each week from September to May, except during holiday periods. We generally do not hold meetings from early June through August.

What We Do

We have fun with a little education thrown in! Each meeting opens with our Beaver cheer and is usually followed by a game to use up some energy. Next we do some themed activities like a craft and related game. Last year we had themes that ran for four to six weeks. For example, we visited the observatory at Western University to open a Space theme. Then we had a storyline that evolved over five weeks where the Beavers had to “visit” several planets in our solar system to achieve a goal. One of the crafts involved making a small robotic rover (out of paper, egg cups, tape, markers) and then a game where they collected minerals (coloured beads) from an asteroid (the floor!) using their own rover. With this age group, we strive to spark their imaginations with a little story and they make it magic. We also do some outdoor activities like walks. Last year was a really joyful experience for everyone involved where the leaders collaborated with ideas for crafts and games each week using the app “Band”. Each meeting comes together with relatively little effort.

We need two or three volunteers to help us out from September 2023!
